Abstract

Although Veblen is recognized for the theme of institutions, there are substantial contributions from the author on technology and its importance in the process of institutional change. Considering that Veblen gained notoriety for his institution-centered approach, the problem that motivated this research arises from the following question: what are Veblen's contributions to technologies? Based on a theoretical-argumentative discussion, with authentic interpretations of the author's main ideas, this article aims to structure Veblen's contributions on technologies. Technology is considered by Veblen as an element immersed in economic and social relations and that goes beyond its physical and material aspect. Both machines and equipment (physical technology) and knowledge accumulated in individuals (social technology) are part of what is called Veblen's “system of technologies” and is related to the “system of institutions”.
