Misinformation About the Rio Grande do Sul Floods

The article examines how misinformation materials about the 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul and the federal government's rice import plan mobilize narrative structures. Through a structural analysis of viral social media content and fact-checking reports from Aos Fatos, based on Vladimir Propp’s framework (2001), the study identifies character functions such as trickery, villainy/lack, and mediation, which point to an enunciation centered on a threat that “is not what it seems.” The findings suggest that misinformation tends to follow a reduced but recurrent structure, sustained by the idea of social manipulation. Furthermore, the research indicates that understanding the morphology of disinformative texts can support media literacy strategies and strengthen efforts to counter misinformation.
