The concepts of imagination and imaginary are historically polyseman and slippery, but this does not hinder their frequent use in the daily conversation about media and culture, as well as in academic discussion on the subject. This paper seeks to focus more detailed attention to these concepts, especially in the field of reception studies, where they can be extremely useful. To do so, we offer a theoretical discussion followed by a short ethnographic essay, in an attempt to better understand the role of imagination in the mediations between different symbolic contexts, such as local traditions and the culture of media.
