Abstract

The present research analyzes the coverage of the murder of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips in the Amazon in 2022 in the news programs Repórter Brasil (EBC) and Jornal Nacional (Globo). The reports were analyzed between June 16th and 22nd with the objective of understanding which voices operate in the process of meaning-making in the newscasts. To this end, the path taken encompasses an analysis through the discursive semiotics of television journalism. The analysis revealed discrepancies in the coverage and the impact of the political alignment of the broadcasters. EBC minimizes the crime, delegitimizes and ignores the victims, while Globo stands out for its extensive coverage, humanization of the victims and criticism of the government. In Bolsonaro's speeches, there is a delegitimization of the victims with controversial statements, blaming them and silencing human rights. Globo plays a relevant role by exposing the crime, presenting sources and contesting official statements. On the other hand, EBC distances itself from its public mission by minimizing the crime and aligning itself with the government's discourse. The coverage of the case reveals the role of the media in the construction of meaning and in the dispute of narratives.
