An Analysis of the decision-making process of a cooperative in Minas Gerais in the light of the cooperative principles

The article analyzes the decision-making process of the Cooperative of Family Producers of Poço Fundo and Region (COOPFAM) in the light of cooperative principles, seeking to understand how these are applied in management practice, as well as identifying the main challenges and limitations faced by the cooperative. The theoretical framework includes a presentation of Brazilian cooperative legislation and the seven cooperative principles defined by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). The research adopts the case study method and semi-structured interviews and documentary research as collection techniques. The information was processed using content analysis. The results show that all the principles are present in COOPFAM's decision-making process, with emphasis on democratic management and education, training and information. On the other hand, the principle of inter-cooperation was less evident. The conclusion is that COOPFAM incorporates the cooperative principles, although it faces challenges related to self-management and the decentralization of power.
