Evaluation in cytopathological tests in a municipality in the far west of Santa Catarina state

Objective: To evaluate the cytopathological examinations of patients attended in a municipality in the extreme west of Santa Catarina during a period of one and a half years. Methods: A retrospective, quantitative, and descriptive study, selecting patients who underwent cytopathological examination from January 2022 to July 2023 in one of the six Basic Health Units (UBS) in the referred municipality. Data such as the month of diagnosis, age group, microbiota, infectious agents, and conclusions of the cytopathological exam results were computed. Results: During the study period, 1,882 exams were evaluated; 1,193 conducted between January and December 2022, and 689 from January to July 2023. Regarding the UBS where these services were provided, the majority occurred at UBS 2 (18.86%, n=355/1882), followed by UBS 1 (18.17%, n=342/1882). Regarding age groups, the prevalent one was 40 to 49 years (23.91%, n=450/1882), followed by 50 to 59 years (21.62%, n=407/1882). As for the epithelium, 46.86% (n=882/1882) presented squamous and glandular epithelium, and 25.55% (n=481/1882) squamous. Concerning microbiota, 49.49% (n=931/1882) did not have this information in the result, however, the lactobacilli category represented 25.34% (n=477/1882). Among the conclusions of the reports, the majority was within normal limits (63.44%, n=1194), followed by inflammation (21.15%, n=398/1882). Additionally, 11.21% (n=211/1882) of the patients presented some infectious agent, among them: Gardnerella vaginalis (82%, n=173/211), Candida sp. (16.1%, n=34/211), and Trichomonas vaginalis (1.9%, n=4/211). Final Considerations: These results provide insight into the local epidemiology of cytopathological examinations in the extreme west of Santa Catarina. The alterations found emphasize the importance of proper monitoring and treatment of patients, with few cases of lesions, but the presence of some inflammatory agents or indicators of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These infections are growing concerns that require early diagnosis and effective treatment, promoting improvements in the population's health.
