Abstract

Health Care Related Infections (HAI) associated with bacterial resistance are one of the biggest problems in global health. About 700,000 deaths will occur and eighty trillion dollars will be spent in the world, until 2050, due to infections with multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRs). Objectives: To describe the impact of interventions aimed at mitigating HAIs and bacterial resistance on health and economic losses. Methods: Integrative literature review, elaborated by the steps of formulating the research question, search in the databases: Science Direct and Virtual Health Library (BVS/MEDLINE), categorization of studies, evaluation, interpretation of results and synthesis of knowledge. Results: fourteen articles were included, of which 71% reported increased mortality in patients affected by HAI and bacterial resistance, as well as 64% showed an increase in economic costs. The bacteria most associated with resistance were gram-negative 28%, especially Acinetobacter baumannii and gram-positive 14%, especially Staphylococcus aureus. After implementing strategies for the control, mitigation and prevention of HAI and bacterial
resistance, in 64% of the analyzed articles there were clear benefits, such as a reduction in the occurrence of infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria (50%), shorter hospital stays (21%) and reduction of hospital costs (57%). Conclusion: After the implementation of programs and strategies aimed at mitigating HAIs and bacterial resistance, there are associated health and economic benefits. In addition, for these problems to have holistic resolutions, it is essential
that health services have adequate infrastructure. Thus, it will be possible to break the cycle of dissemination of multidrug-resistant strains and mitigate all associated losses.
