Abstract

It is estimated that 25% of medicines are derived from medicinal plants. Moringa oleifera is a tree belonging to the Moringaceae family widely used in the treatment of diseases, due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, among other qualities. The genus Candida represents the main group of yeasts that cause human infections. The use of available antifungals against candidiasis can lead to the development of resistant strains, thus compromising treatment. The aim of this study was to analyze scientific evidence, through an integrative literature review, about the antifungal potential of Moringa oleifera against yeasts of the genus Candida. A bibliographic survey was carried out in the databases: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS / Bireme), using the following descriptors: “Moringa oleifera”, “Candida”, “antifungics” and “Antifungal agents”, with the original and complete articles published in the last 10 years as an eligibility criterion, without language specification and that responded to the research objective. Of the 67 articles found, nine were selected. All the studies analyzed showed that extracts from different parts of M. oleifera have antifungal activity against Candida spp., As well as against other species of pathogens also tested, in addition to their demonstrated low toxicity. Thus, the antimicrobial activity of M. oleiferais highlighted, which places it as a promising source of products to combat fungal infections.
