The prevention of sexually transmitted infections by young university students - a study of social representations

Introduction: Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are a public health problem that manifests itself in individuals with unprotected sexual practices. As a result of behavioral aspects of youth, such as early sexual initiation and search for new experiences, they are a vulnerable group to STIs. Objectives: To describe the contents of social representations about STIs and the prevention practices of young female university students. Method: Qualitative study, supported by the Theory of Social Representations and procedural approach. Conducted with 80 university students, in 2021, who answered a form, to capture social data, sexual practices and STI prevention, and semi-structured interview. Ethical aspects were respected. Results: The university students, although recognizing the importance of adhering to STI prevention practices, assume a vulnerable sexual behavior. Conclusion: The social representations of young women about STIs are anchored in biomedical knowledge, however prevention practices are modulated by affective relationships.
