Sustentabilidade universitária no Brasil e América Latina: uma análise comparativa dos critérios do UI greenmetric pelo método de entropia

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the UI GreenMetric international university ranking through the theoretical lens of university sustainability and its relationship with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aiming to identify which categories of indicators have the greatest impact on the ranking of Latin American universities compared to Brazilian universities.
Design/methodology/approach – The entropy calculation method was applied to data from 217 Latin American universities, including Brazilian institutions, which allows the weights assigned to each criterion in the ranking to be determined based on the variability and relevance of the information without the interference of the researchers' personal biases.
Findings – The “Water” category (SDG 6) emerged as the most significant dimension, but the analysis also highlighted the importance of Waste (SDGs 12 and 15), Energy and Climate Change (SDGs 7 and 13), and Education and Research in Sustainability (SDG 4). While Brazilian universities show a relatively balanced distribution among criteria, Latin American universities exhibit a stronger concentration in Water and Waste, revealing regional specificities often overlooked in the literature.
Originality/value – The results contribute to advancing the debate on sustainability in higher education by moving beyond rankings as an end in themselves and positioning universities as strategic actors in sustainability policies and practices. The study provides evidence to support the prioritization of areas with higher disorder or inefficiency and the implementation of targeted strategies to improve institutional sustainability.
