Recognition of training modalities in graphic arts through the accounts of typographers. Colombian case, 1950-2000.

Abstract

This article examines the learning processes in the sphere of graphic arts through the study of two training models identified in the accounts of a group of workers from three southwestern Colombian cities. Through structured interviews focused on elicit life narratives, the study seeks to connect, within the array of personal narratives, spatial, temporal, and discursive interconnections related to the transformations of the world of graphic arts in the period from 1950 to 2000, coinciding with the period of work activity of the interviewees. The result of the study shows the adoption of localized strategies that enabled groups of printers to negotiate the terms of introduction of technological advancements in printing, employing a mix of traditional and modern training modalities.

Laura Judith Sandoval Sarmiento, Universidad del Cauca

Graphic designer from the National University of Colombia, master's degree in Typing: Discipline and Uses, from the University of Barcelona, ​​Spain. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Design at the University of Palermo. She is an associate professor at the University of Cauca, attached to the Department of Design. Director of the Typographic Studies Research Group of the Department of Design, Faculty of Arts of the University of Cauca, where the lines of research are addressed: typography and visual culture, education and didactics in typography, printed culture and graphic heritage. Since 2018 I have been a member of the Latin American Network of Graphic Culture (red-cg).

Hugo Alonso Plazas Paéz, Universidad de Nariño

Graphic designer from the National University of Colombia and master's degree in Communication Design from the University of Buenos Aires. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in History of Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Alberta, Canada. Associate Professor at the University of Nariño, assigned to the design department. Director of the Research Group in History and Theory of Design at the University of Nariño. member of the Latin American Network of Graphic Culture (red-cg) and Association for Latin American Art.
