Author Guidelines

Expressão: Journal of Arts, Letters, and Design is an annual, open-access, continuous-flow publication dedicated to disseminating innovative and academically relevant research. The journal aims, through the publication of scientific articles, reviews, interviews, and essays, to foster the theoretical and practical development of research focused on the fields of Arts, Literature, and Design.

Expressão publishes articles in Portuguese, English, Italian, and Spanish. All submissions must fall under one of the journal’s sections: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Design, Literature, and Music. We welcome works that address, among others, the following thematic areas:

• Creative processes, research, and their interdisciplinary aspects;
• Language studies in the Arts, Literature, and Design;
• Visual, auditory, performative, and verbal poetics;
• Interactions between text, image, and object;
• Aesthetics, technology, culture, and contemporary criticism;
• Intersemiotic translation and linguistic experimentation;
• Graphic, editorial, and interaction design in dialogue with the arts;
• Narratives and fiction in literature, design, and the visual arts;
• Emerging technologies and languages in interdisciplinary approaches;
• Interdisciplinary collaborative projects and practices.

The journal publishes exclusively unpublished content. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that their works are original and free of plagiarism; they are directly responsible for all content in the material submitted for review.

By submitting their manuscripts, authors also agree not to submit the same work to another publication simultaneously.  The Expressão Journal adopts the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing as its reference. By submitting their texts, authors agree to follow the ethical guidelines established by these standards, ensuring responsible and ethical behavior in the publication process.

The article must be formatted using the journal’s template, available under Documents, and follow the guidelines below:

1. Manuscripts must be submitted in MS Word format (.doc or .docx). The author is responsible for proofreading for spelling, grammar, and style. In the case of co-authored submissions, at least one author must hold a Ph.D. For individual submissions, the author must hold a Ph.D.
2. All submissions must be accompanied by an abstract and keywords in Portuguese, English, and another language (Spanish or Italian). Each abstract must contain a maximum of 200 words and 5 keywords, separated by semicolons. Use single spacing and the Open Sans 10 font.
3. The body of the text must be written in Open Sans 12, 1.5 line spacing. All margins must be 2 cm, A4 paper. Terms in languages other than the text must be written in italics.
4. The following items must be observed: a) Double quotation marks for quotations of up to three lines; b) Quotations of more than three lines must be set off with a 4-centimeter indent from the left margin, in Open Sans 10 and without quotation marks. c) Foreign words, neologisms, or titles of works and publications must be set off in italics. d) The article title should not exceed 20 words. e) Explanatory notes should be footnotes, numbered, and brief.
5. For all submissions, the complete list of bibliographic references must appear at the end of the text and must comply with the updated ABNT standards.
6. Images must be in .JPEG format at 300 dpi. Image data in articles must comply with ABNT standards. The journal is not responsible for obtaining image copyrights. Images will be accepted with proper credits and captions. Copyright is the sole responsibility of the authors.
7. Articles. Articles must be between 15,000 and 35,000 characters (including spaces) in the main text (excluding the title, abstract, keywords, and references). They must address a topic relevant to the field of submission and contribute to the advancement of knowledge, using clear language and engaging with existing references.
8. Reviews. Reviews must be between 10,000 and 30,000 characters (including spaces) in the body of the text (excluding title, abstract, keywords, and references). This section consists of critical analyses of published works that expand upon or contribute to studies in the fields of Arts, Literature, and Design.
9. Essays. Essays must be between 5,000 and 25,000 characters (including spaces) in the body of the text (excluding title, abstract, keywords, and references). Essays on research by artists, designers, laboratories, and collaborative or collective practices will be accepted. This section consists of critical texts marked by a personal style, which consist of a persuasive and public statement of opinions, principles, and intentions with the aim of denouncing an issue, raising awareness of a problem, or calling on the community to take action. The writing must be argumentative in nature, identifying and analyzing a problem, and must also present possible solutions.
10. Interviews. Interviews must be between 5,000 and 25,000 characters (including spaces) in the body of the text (excluding the title, abstract, keywords, and references). They must also include the full name, year of birth, profession, institutional affiliation, and biography of the interviewee, as well as a brief explanation of the context and relevance of the interview.
11. Articles/reviews/essays/interviews must be submitted ready for double-blind review; that is, the author’s name or institutional affiliation must not appear. Any information identifying the author must be omitted from both the text and the file.
12. Translations. Translations of foreign-language texts into Portuguese will be accepted, provided they are accompanied by authorization from the copyright holder of the original text. Translations must indicate the context of the original work, its relevance to the field, and the importance of the publication in Portuguese. The original title and author, the translator’s name, and the date of translation must be mentioned.
13. Dossier. This section consists of unpublished articles relevant to the journal’s thematic area and the specific dossier, the theme of which may be proposed by any member of the Editorial Committee, Editorial Board, or Guest Editors.
14. Poetic Proposals. This section consists of artistic essays, performative writings, artists’ notes, visual interventions, accounts of the creative process, experience reports, design processes, and design solutions.
15. Visual, Audiovisual, and Audio Essays. This section consists of essays that must stem from consolidated artistic and design research. Visual essays must include images, preferably in color, in .JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi. Audiovisual essays must contain .mp4 files up to 100MB, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes. Sound essays must contain lossless audio files (.WAV, .AIFF, .FLAC) up to 100MB. If the submission is not unpublished, the author must indicate whether they hold the copyright, under what circumstances it was previously published, and whether the content has undergone any modifications. An external link must be provided in a note to the editor: set it to “unlisted” or “private” (unpublished status) on YouTube, Vimeo, or Archive.org. Essays must be accompanied by an abstract and keywords in Portuguese, English, and another language (Spanish or Italian), in accordance with the journal’s guidelines. For videos, after submission is approved, three frames from the file must be provided in .JPEG format at 300 dpi.
16. Performative writings, artists’ notes, and creative processes. Experimental writing by Brazilian and international artists, designers, and/or researchers. Writings related to records of creative processes and experimental investigations of thought and composition; diagrams; poems; graphic proposals, among others. Writings related to the trajectories of creative processes and thought in the arts, as well as accounts of investigations based on the experiences of artists, designers, and/or researchers.
17. In cases of plagiarism, the authors are directly responsible. Authors are responsible for obtaining authorization for the use of images, audio, and video files, as well as for their content. The journal Expressão is exempt from any liability for the use of audiovisual files, their content, and their publication. The images, sounds, and content do not reflect the thinking, philosophy, politics, or ideology of the journal Expressão or the Federal University of Santa Maria.
18. The use of AI tools must be disclosed at the time of submission, specifying the excerpt used, the tool, the version (when applicable), the period of use, and the specific purpose. AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors; full responsibility for the content lies exclusively with the authors. Their use is permitted only as technical support for the drafting of short excerpts and for textual organization; their use to replace intellectual work, develop arguments, produce analyses, or generate original academic content is prohibited. Manuscripts produced without substantial human intellectual contribution will not be accepted, and failure to comply may result in rejection.
19. Authors agree to the guidelines and rules for manuscript submission, retain copyright, and grant Revista Expressão the right of first publication under  a  Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY SA 4.0) at the time of submission.
20. Privacy Policy. The names and addresses provided to this journal will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.

Authors’ contributions must adhere to the CRediT taxonomy (Contributions to Research and Innovation Taxonomy), which is a high-level taxonomy comprising 14 roles that can be used to represent the roles typically performed by contributors to academic and scientific production. These roles describe the specific and individual contributions of each author to academic and scientific research. The taxonomy provides a way to represent information about authors’ individual contributions. Its purpose is to provide transparency regarding authors’ contributions to scientific works, enabling improvements in attribution, credit, and accountability systems. It is important to note that more than one term may be assigned to a single contributor.

Conflict of Interest Policy

Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any financial or other conflicts of interest that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, even a potential one, the author(s) must disclose it in a separate, signed document attached to the submission platform.

Code of Ethics and Best Practices in Publishing

The journal Expressão adopts the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing as its reference. By submitting their texts, authors agree to follow the ethical guidelines established by these standards, ensuring responsible and ethical behavior in the publication process.
