Abstract

Soybean productivity, the main spring-summer crop in RS, has its annual variability explained by the greater or lesser water availability of each agricultural year, with a direct association with ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation). Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the yield components, productivity and water use efficiency of soybean (EUA), with and without supplemental irrigation, in La Niña and El Niño years, in the period between 2018 and 2024, in Cachoeira do Sul - RS. For this purpose, field experiments were carried out in each agricultural year, evaluating crop productivity with and without supplemental irrigation. The yield component that had the greatest increase with irrigation was the number of pods per plant, being 25% for El Niño years and 40% for La Niña years. The productivity of rainfed soybeans was higher > 4,150 kg ha-1 in agricultural years under the influence of El Niño (2018-19 and 2023-24), in which the difference in productivity between the irrigated (average of 4,572 kg ha-1) and rainfed (average of 4,171 kg ha-1) water regimes was small. The productivity of irrigated soybeans was higher in agricultural years under the influence of La Niña (2019/20 to 2022/23), averaging 4,937 kg ha-1 and reaching up to 6,883 kg ha-1. The EUA was higher in La Niña years (on average 9.3 kg mm-1) compared to El Niño years (7.4 kg mm-1) and, in relation to the average data, it was higher in the rainfed water regime (8.9 kg mm-1) compared to the irrigated one (8.6 kg mm-1).
