Knowledge of first pregnants about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding

Objective: to identify the knowledge of first-time pregnant women about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding in the state of Santa Catarina in 2023. Methods: This is a study with a qualitative approach, in which first-time pregnant women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy participated during the collection period data collection that took place in July 2023. Participants were invited via social media. Data were collected using a form prepared by the researchers with closed and open questions. They were segmented and categorized in a Microsoft Office Excel® spreadsheet, the results were analyzed using Minayo's theme, and the results were discussed through scientific literature, looking for approximations and discrepancies. Results: eleven primiparous women participated in the study and we obtained the result that the primiparous women's knowledge about the “benefits for the baby” category, the majority demonstrated that they had mastery of the subject, however regarding the topic of benefits for the mother, they did not demonstrate as much knowledge as they knew of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the baby. Final considerations: it is concluded that the majority of pregnant women demonstrated that they had some knowledge about breastfeeding and its benefits, however it was identified that mothers are often so focused on the baby's health and forget that they are the protagonists.
