Abstract

The dermatological area has always been in search of new treatments with proven efficacy and that had antiandrogenic actions for acne in adult women, in the administration of commonly used drugs such as antimicrobials, combined oral contraceptives and oral isotretinoin. Among these drugs, an alternative therapy is spironolactone, which is normally used for congestive heart readings, but which has off-label antiandrogenic use. This integrative review aimed to discuss the use of spironolactone for the treatment of acne in adult women. For this, scientific articles found in the following databases were used: BVS, PUBMED and ScieLO. Among the results found, it was observed that the off-label use of spironolactone is an effective and safe treatment option for acne vulgaris in adult women with fewer adverse reactions, compared, for example, to antimicrobials, which have the associated risk of microbial resistance.
