Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the parameters of the complete blood count of individuals working in the metalworking industries, in the admission exam and in the periodic exams of 1 and 2 years after the beginning of the work, and correlate them with the levels of Urinary Hippuric Acid and Serum Lead. Methods: This is a longitudinal retrospective study, whereby the results of admission and 1 and 2 years periodic examinations of blood count, Urinary Hipuric Acid and Serum Lead were collected from the database of metalworking companies. The results were analyzed by Anova of Repeated Measures, T Test and Pearson’s Correlation Test. Results: There was a significant increase in the levels of Urinary Hypuric Acid and a significant decrease in platelet count after 2 years of work. Despite changes in the levels of Urinary Hypuric Acid and platelets, these remained within the established reference limits and there was no correlation between these two variables. The parameters of the erythrogram, leukogram and serum Lead showed no significant differences. Conclusion: The results indicate that the correct use of individual and collective protection equipment was not sufficient to completely prevent the effects of chemical compounds from the metalworking industry on parameters of urinary Hypuric Acid and platelet count of workers.
