Fragments of São Paulo city graphic memory: periodicals printed by Typographia Hennies Irmãos (Hennies Brothers Letterpress Printing Shop) for immigrant communities

In order to contribute to the reconstitution of São Paulo’s immigrants’ graphic memory, this article analyzes
ephemeral printed matter to understand the relations between immigrant communities and printing history.
The visual language of newspapers Paulistaner Echo, in German, La Bestia Umana, in Italian, Echo Português,
aimed at Portuguese immigrants, Lihdumneeks, in Latvian, and O Oriente magazine, in Arabic, all of them
printed by Typographia Hennies Irmãos (Hennies Brothers Letterpress Printing Shop), was analyzed. The
results revealed an intense relationship between the Hennies and different immigrant communities, which
gives dimension to the multilingual graphic scenario that permeated Brazilian print culture at the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries.
