About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The journal Expressão: Revista de Artes, Letras e Design is an open-access, annual, continuous-flow academic journal that aims to promote interdisciplinary dialogue among the fields of Arts, Letters, and Design, stimulating critical reflection, theoretical experimentation, and the articulation between contemporary practices and discourses. The publication serves as a space for the interweaving of knowledge, welcoming research that crosses disciplinary boundaries and explores creative, methodological, and conceptual interfaces between languages, technologies, aesthetics, and forms of expression.

The journal is committed to diversity of perspectives, academic rigor, and innovation in ways of thinking about and communicating knowledge. In doing so, it seeks to strengthen collaborative networks and foster new ways of producing and sharing knowledge in the fields of the humanities and the creative arts. We value contributions that address emerging themes, hybrid practices, and plural epistemologies, as well as the integration of research, teaching, and outreach. The journal aims to disseminate the results of research and artistic and technological productions developed in the fields of Arts, Letters, and Design to the academic, artistic, and scientific communities, and welcomes scholarly articles, visual essays, interviews, annotated translations, reviews, and experience reports that contribute to the expansion of interdisciplinary debates. The target audience includes researchers, faculty, students, and artists in the fields of Arts, Letters, and Design.

The journal publishes exclusively unpublished content in the following languages: Portuguese, English, Italian, and Spanish. It is the authors’ responsibility to ensure that their works are original and free of plagiarism. By submitting their manuscripts, authors also agree not to submit the same work to another publication simultaneously.  The journal Expressão adopts the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing as its reference. By submitting their texts, authors agree to follow the ethical guidelines established by these standards, ensuring responsible and ethical behavior in the publication process.

Expressão is published annually and is available online on a rolling basis.

 The journal Expressão does not charge fees for the submission and publication of manuscripts.

Ad Hoc Committee

Articles published in the journal Expressão are subject to scientific review. The list of reviewers is published by the time each issue goes to press.

Peer Review Process

Submitted manuscripts are initially reviewed by the section editors, who assess their suitability for the scope of the journal and the section to which they were submitted. Texts selected in this first stage will undergo a “double-blind” peer review process, meaning that two ad hoc reviewers from institutions different from those of the author(s) will evaluate the article. An article recommended by two reviewers will be considered approved. In the event of a conflict between the reviewers, the article will be sent to a third reviewer.

The author will be informed of the evaluation results. Any suggested changes to form or content made by the reviewers will be forwarded to the author, who must resubmit the final version of the work containing the suggested changes.

Manuscripts are also checked for plagiarism and self-plagiarism using specialized software.

Open Access Policy

The journal Expressão offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public promotes greater democratization of knowledge.

Copyright Policy

The authors of articles published by the journal Expressão retain the copyright to their works. The journal adopts the  Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY SA 4.0), which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction for non-commercial purposes, provided that the original work is properly cited. Additionally, works derived from the journal’s publications must be distributed under the same type of license as the original material (CC BY SA 4.0).

Conflict of Interest Policy

Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for identifying and disclosing any financial or other conflicts of interest that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, even a potential one, the author(s) must disclose it in a separate signed document attached to the submission platform.

Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The journal regulates the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), in the manuscript review and editing processes, based on the principles of scientific integrity, intellectual responsibility, confidentiality, and transparency, in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The specific guidelines are:

1- Use by authors: the use of AI tools must be declared at the time of submission, indicating the excerpt used, the tool, version (when applicable), period of use, and specific purpose. AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors, and full responsibility for the content lies exclusively with the authors. Use is permitted only as technical support for the drafting of short excerpts and textual organization; their use to replace intellectual work, develop arguments, produce analyses, or generate original academic content is prohibited. Manuscripts produced without substantial human intellectual contribution will not be accepted, and non-compliance may result in rejection.

2- Use by reviewers: the preparation of the review report is the sole responsibility of the reviewer, and it is prohibited to delegate this task to AI systems or third parties. The uploading of manuscripts or confidential information to external platforms is prohibited, due to the duty of confidentiality in peer review.

3- Use by the editorial team: The editorial team may use AI only for technical and administrative support, under direct human supervision, for activities such as similarity checks, reference normalization, and editorial communications. Any use that compromises confidentiality, the integrity of the editorial process, or the editorial board’s decision-making responsibility is prohibited.

Code of Ethics and Best Practices in Publishing

The journal Expressão adopts the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Principles of Transparency and Best Practices in Scholarly Publishing as its reference. All parties involved in the publication process must adhere to the policies adopted by the journal to maintain the highest standards of scientific integrity, transparency, impartiality, social responsibility, and respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

History

Founded in 1996, Expressão is recognized in various fields. The journal was published biannually in print until 2025, with issues released in June and December, and transitioned to annual online publication with a continuous flow starting with the 2026 issue.

Digital Preservation

The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) values digital preservation and is one of the core partners and one of the 12 repositories of the Cariniana Network. Therefore, with this in mind, the journals on the UFSM Journal Portal are integrated into the Network via LOCKSS, ensuring their permanent availability on the web. They are also identified by Keepers in the ISSN registry.
