Abstract

This paper discusses on the weakly nonlinear theory of dispersivewaves in geophysical fluid dynamics, pointing out the possible implicationsof the results published on this subject for some fundamental issues inatmospheric science. A special emphasis is given on the difference betweenthe interaction in midlatitudes and in the equatorial wave-guide. The analysisemployed here is focused on the case where the waves are embedded in amotionless background state. I also discuss some possible subjects for futurework regarding the application of the weakly nonlinear theory for thegoverning equations of the atmosphere, which take into account both the effects of the vertical stratification and the effects of more realisticbackground flows.
